MOUNTAIN

Pilgrim

Music by He Xun-tian

In the Buddhist and ancient Bon religions, Mt. Kailas in extreme western Tibet is thought to be the cosmic pillar that upholds the vault of Heaven. A pilgrimage to this most inaccessible site is a sign of true faith. But Kailas is not a climbing mountain – it is too holy for human trespass. Humans get their blessings by circling its base. The journey takes half a week – if you walk – some pilgrims circle the mountain on hands and knees, inchworm fashion – which takes awhile longer. The dance of Mountain is based on this pilgrimage.
